Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday staged one of the most notable jailbreaks in the IPL.
The defeat was quite certain at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, where the Punjab Kings (PBKS) needed just eight runs from the last two overs.Aiden Makram and Nicholas Puran should have walked in the park for Punjab as they have two sets of batsmen at the crease. However, Mustafizur Rahman scored only four runs in the last over.
Still, Punjab were the favorites when Karthik Tyagi started the run-up for the last over. He caught Puran with the third ball. After bowling a point to Deepak Hooda, he also slapped Sanju Samson on the back of the stumps.
The renegade new man did not give Fabian Allen a chance to play the protagonist. Instead, with another dot ball, Tyagi himself became an unlikely hero for RR, who won by two runs.
However, poor fielding and a weak end in the innings could prove costly for the Royals. KL Rahul was dropped three times with the help of Punjab captain (49, 33B, 4×4, 2×6) and his Karnataka Ranji-Trophy teammate Mayank Agarwal (67, 43B, 7×4, 2×6). The Royals batted first. , 185 was built.
Arshdeep Singh was the main reason for the Royals to retreat after a great start. The 22-year-old left-arm Seemer bowled brilliantly to take his first five wickets in the IPL, which shows that he has a mature head on his young shoulders. He was calm as the Royals batsmen threatened to explode several times.
The Royals’ new opening pair of Evin Lewis and the successful Jaiswal (49, 36b, 6×4, 2×6) took the lead after scoring 50 runs in five overs. The West Indies have been in excellent form since their first match for the RRR in the Caribbean Premier League and before Mayank Diving was out on top cover.
Arshdeep also dismissed two other dangerous-looking batsmen – Liam Livingstone (25, 17b, 2x, 16) and Mahipal Lomer (42, 17b, 2×4, 4×6). He finished the innings with two wickets in the last two balls.
Rajasthan Royals: 185 all out in 20 overs. (Y Jaiswal 49, Evin Lewis 36; Arshdeep Singh 5/32, M Shami 3/21)
Punjab Kings: 183 for 4 in 20 overs. (M Agarwal 67, KL Rahul 49; R Teotia 1/23)
WHAT THEY SAID
Sanju Samson, RR Captain: Somewhere we had that fight left. We knew we had some bowlers. We had the best fielding plan for every batsman. We were happy with our score. We are a better bowling and fielding team. If it hadn’t been for the drop in advance, we could have won the match earlier.
Player of the Match Karthik Tyagi: Injured during India leg. Felt sorry. It looks really good. I’ve talked to people. They are telling me that things are changing in this format, so I need to have faith. Today, I am lucky enough to have played a big role in this particular game.
KL Rahul, PBKS Captain: We need to see how we can handle stress better. It happened with the best of the game. It’s hard to swallow that you haven’t learned from your past mistakes. We bowled well in the first six. Unfortunately the edges have taken it away from us. But we pulled it well with the help of the ball.
