Sri Lanka announce T20 World Cup squad; Dasun Shanaka named captain, Kusal Perera returns

Wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Perera, who missed India and the ongoing South Africa series, is back in the squad, with veteran promoter Dinesh Chandimal retaining his place despite some good performances against the Proteas.

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLB) has announced a 15-member squad and four reserve players for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman in October-November.

“The squad was approved by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon’ble Namal Rajapaksa,” the SLC said in an official statement.

Thekshana, a 21-year-old mystery spinner who took four wickets in his ODI debut against South Africa last week, is joined by left-arm spinner Praveen Joybikrama, the only player on the team to have taken 11 wickets.  Test debut against Bangladesh earlier this year.

Wanindu Hasaranga and Dhananjaya de Silva completed the spin bowling squad, which included Akila Dhananjaya and leg-spinner Pulina Tharanga.

Experienced pacer Nuwan Pradeep has been included as part of the pace attack which includes Dushmant Chamera and all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne and Lahiru Madhushanka.

Sri Lanka will leave for Oman on October 3 to play in two T20 matches before participating in the T20 World Cup.

According to the SLC, two matches will be played on October 7 and October, which will pave the way for the visiting team to prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

After two matches against Oman, Sri Lanka will play two warm-up matches for the ICC-hosted World Cup on October 12 and 1 before starting their T20 World Cup campaign.
